Village by Night
Find the werewolves before they devour the village!
How to Play
Roles
Everyone gets a secret role: Werewolf, Villager, Seer, Witch, Hunter, or Bodyguard.
Night
Werewolves choose a victim. The Seer reveals a role. The Witch can heal or poison.
Day
The village discusses and votes on who they think is a werewolf. Most votes = execution.
Village Goal
Find and eliminate all werewolves through voting.
Werewolf Goal
Devour enough villagers until werewolves outnumber them.
Strategy & tips
As a villager, silence is the most expensive mistake. Saying nothing provides no information and gets you suspected during the day. Better to say something wrong you can correct later than nothing at all.
As a wolf you do not talk less, you talk differently. Experienced wolves are not caught lying — they are caught taking a position too late. Join the vote early, and occasionally vote against your own suspicion.
Watch the votes, not the protestations. Who accuses whom is solid information; declarations of innocence are not. Two players who consistently never accuse each other across several rounds are a pattern.
The seer should not reveal immediately. Announcing knowledge too early gets you eliminated that same night. It is usually better to phrase the finding as a suspicion and reveal only when it decides the vote.
Variants
No moderator
The night phase runs automatically and everyone plays. That is how it works here, so nobody has to sit out.
More roles
Cupid, thief or avenger add further twists. Every extra role raises the complexity of the discussion noticeably.
No elimination
Players who die keep listening and guess at the end. Removes the waiting from the round.

Origin
The game descends from Mafia, devised in 1986 by Dimitri Davidoff at Moscow State University as a psychology experiment. It was meant to show how an informed minority can control an uninformed majority.
In game theory it is a standard example of asymmetric information. Calculations show that without special roles the village cannot win below a certain ratio at all — which is why roles like the seer and the witch are balance rather than decoration.
Frequently asked questions
How many players do I need?
At least four, and it gets genuinely good from seven upwards. The bigger the group, the harder the truth is to find.
What happens at night?
The wolves choose a victim, the seer may reveal a role, the witch can save or poison. All of it happens hidden.
Who wins?
The village, once every wolf is exposed. The wolves, once they outnumber the rest.
