Type Racing
Who types the fastest? Type the text faster than your opponents!
How to Play
Goal
Type the displayed text as fast and accurately as possible.
Gameplay
All players see the same text. Type letter by letter. Errors increase your error counter.
WPM
Your speed is measured in words per minute (WPM): (characters / 5) / minutes.
Winner
First player to finish typing wins. If time runs out, the player who typed the most wins.
Strategy & tips
Accuracy beats speed. A typo costs more time than three slowly typed words, because you have to notice it, go back and fix it. Deliberately typing ten per cent slower usually finishes faster.
Look at the text, not the keys. The single largest loss of time comes from shifting your gaze between screen and keyboard. Even without touch typing, keeping your eyes up and letting your hands work gains noticeably.
Read one word ahead. Practised fast typists are already processing the next word while their fingers finish the current one. That offset is the difference between halting and fluent typing.
Variants
No corrections
Mistakes cannot be fixed and count against you at the end. The balance shifts entirely towards accuracy.
Technical text
Instead of everyday language you type text full of unusual terms and numbers. Practised patterns stop helping.
Endurance
Rather than a short sprint you type for several minutes. Consistency matters more than peak pace.

Origin
Typing contests are older than the computer. Public typewriter championships were held in the United States around 1900, some before large audiences and with considerable prize money.
The QWERTY layout dates from the same era and was not designed for speed but to stop mechanical typebars jamming. Alternative layouts are theoretically faster but never displaced it.
Frequently asked questions
