Hangman
Guess the word letter by letter!
How to Play
Goal
Guess the secret word before the hangman is fully drawn!
Gameplay
Pick a letter. If it's in the word, it's revealed. If not, a body part is drawn.
Simultaneous
All players guess the same word at the same time. You can see others' progress (but not their letters).
Winner
Whoever solves the word with fewest wrong guesses wins. At 7 wrong guesses, you're out.
Strategy & tips
Start with vowels, but not all of them. E and A are by far the most frequent in English; I, N, R and S follow. Asking for those six reveals half the positions in most words.
Once a pattern emerges, stop guessing by frequency and start guessing by structure. A gap between two known consonants is almost always a vowel, and a known letter in the ending often reveals the part of speech and therefore the likely suffix.
Look at the word length before naming your first letter. Short words are unpredictable and often carry rare letters. Long words are kinder, because they almost inevitably repeat common letters.
Variants
Evil hangman
The word is not fixed in advance — the computer picks whichever answer keeps the most possibilities open. Considerably harder.
Categories
A topic is named before the start, shifting the game from letter guessing to knowledge guessing.
Timed
Every letter must be chosen within a few seconds. Systematic play is rewarded and dithering punished.

Origin
The game is documented from the nineteenth century and first appeared in a Victorian collection of children's pastimes. It never needed more than paper and pencil, which explains how widely it spread.
In modern terms it is a simple case of sequential decision under uncertainty: each letter potentially costs a life and buys information in return. The optimal strategy depends entirely on the letter frequencies of the target language.
Frequently asked questions
How many wrong guesses do I get?
A fixed number that completes the drawing. Once it is finished, the round is lost.
Which letter is the best opener?
E in English. It accounts for roughly one letter in eight, far more than any other.
Can I guess the whole word at once?
Yes, but it carries risk — a wrong full guess costs the same as a wrong letter.
