Five Dice
Roll the best combination!
How to Play
Goal
Score the highest total by rolling and placing into 13 categories.
Gameplay
Roll 5 dice. You may re-roll up to 2 times, keeping any dice you want. Then choose a category.
Categories
Upper section: Ones through Sixes (sum of matching dice, bonus at 63+). Lower section: Three/Four of a Kind, Full House (25), Small Straight (30), Large Straight (40), Five of a Kind (50), Chance.
Winner
After 13 rounds, the player with the highest total wins.
Strategy & tips
The upper-section bonus is the most important decision in the game. You need 63 points, which is exactly three dice of every value. If you fall short after ones through sixes, every row where you entered only two dice cost you five to ten points against that bonus.
Chance is your emergency exit, not a target. Keep it free as long as you can: it rescues a botched third roll without forcing you to cross out a valuable category. Fill it early with 18 points and you will later be choosing between two zeros.
Large straight early, full house late. The large straight needs five different faces and is the least likely combination, so chase it while you still have categories to fall back on. A full house, by contrast, can be salvaged from almost any interim roll.
On the first roll keep pairs, not loners. Two matching dice are the start of three of a kind, four of a kind, a full house and five of a kind all at once. Holding a single high number costs you options.
Variants
Six dice
An extra die and extended categories make high combinations far more likely and push scores up noticeably.
General
In the Latin American reading, five of a kind on the first roll wins outright. Games occasionally end dramatically early.
Open scorecards
Everyone's scorecard is visible. Because you can see which rows your opponents still need, a solo race against the dice becomes a genuine duel.

Origin
The format comes from the family of poker dice games. A direct ancestor is the English game Yacht, a nineteenth-century shipboard pastime with an almost identical scorecard. Latin America knows the variant Generala, and Scandinavia its own version in which five of a kind is still called a general.
The appeal lies between luck and bookkeeping. The dice decide what is possible; the scorecard decides what it is worth. Strong players rarely lose to bad rolls — they lose to rows spent too early.
Frequently asked questions
How many rolls do I get?
Three per turn. After the first and second roll you may set aside any number of dice and reroll the rest.
What is the upper-section bonus?
Reach at least 63 points across the ones through sixes and you are awarded 35 extra points. That target equals three dice of every value.
Must I score something every round?
Yes. If nothing fits you have to cross out a row and close it at zero. That is why keeping Chance free pays off.
How many players work well?
Two to six. Since everyone fills the same scorecard in parallel, larger groups stay engaging.
